I left work and was meeting up with my friend Jonathan in Hells Kitchen and decided to walk through Times Square from my job in midtown. It was a Saturday and I knew that the area would be buzzing and make for a good photo somehow.
I didn’t think that there would be a black man in the middle of Times Square in his briefs with a boom box.
There are a couple of things that I love about this.
It is Quintessential New York City, you can experience anything here.
The women’s faces of judgement.
The boombox and socks
This man hustlin’ with what his momma gave him to make some $$

I used to transfer at 59th to the B/D to get to work, but recently have just been going to 42nd and walking over, it’s faster it seems. Well, every day I would transfer I would be met by this guy on drums and a guy on an electric piano. The same spot, the same time, every day.

This time I stepped off the train and there were now 5 of them and with a whole lot more instruments. I believe I was too close when recording this, but it gives you an idea. They were surround, the music was really good - always calming.

23rd Street No.1 Uptown At 5:35p | MTA | New York City

In this new series that I would like to start I am starting off with a fresh track from the 16th of March, 2012. In my previous recordings of men and women performing on the New York MTA I didn’t take photos of the performers and thought as a photographer that maybe I should. Even if I don’t like asking people to take their photograph, so this will be interesting. Also, the more I think about it I wish I would have gotten this mans name.

Hope you enjoy! I hope to bring this every week at least once.
